Dr. Smith grew up in Canon City and graduated in 1973 from Canon City High School. He attended Colorado State University where he received his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine in 1981. After spending 4 1/2 years in the Army stationed mainly in Italy, he returned to Canon City.
He purchased Fremont Veterinary Hospital from Dr. Gerald Shiner. In 1993 he purchased Canon City Small Animal Hospital from Dr. Paul Hildebrand and combined the practices. In 2000 he built a new facility where the practice is now.
Dr. Smith's favorite areas of practice are surgery and dentistry. In his spare time he enjoys travel, golf, and playing music. He and his wife, Sandy, have a family of 7 children and 13 grandchildren. They have two dogs, Maddie and Annie. Dr. Smith and Sandy are very involved with their church and the Canon City Noon Lions Club.
Dr. Sarek, is a Canon City native, who graduated from Canon City High School in 2007. He received his
Bachelor of Science degree in Microbiology from Colorado State University in 2011. During his final year of undergraduate education, he had the opportunity to work in a level 3 biosecurity lab on a research project to develop better suited PPD skin tests for the bacteria Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Continuing his education, he went on to earn his Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine degree from Colorado State University in 2015. During his senior clinical year of veterinary school he was awarded the Relationship Centered Care Award for veterinary communication and professional excellence. He also had the opportunity to participate in international veterinary medicine studying abroad for a month at the University of Edinburgh in Edinburgh, Scotland. After completion of veterinary school, Dr. Sarek went on to pursue a rotating internship at the VCA Veterinary Specialty Center of Seattle from June 2015 to June 2016. His professional interests include orthopedics, soft tissue surgery, and internal medicine. Being a Colorado native he enjoys spending time outdoors as much as possible. In his free time, he enjoys spending time with family and friends, traveling, camping, hiking, long distance running, water skiing, and playing golf.
As a Cañon City native, Ashley is thrilled to return home after spending the last four years in Fort Collins where she completed her Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine degree at Colorado State University. Prior to that, she received her Bachelor Science degree in Biology with minors in Chemistry and Supervisory Management from Colorado State University-Pueblo.
Dr. Metcalfe has a special interest in animal behavior and is currently the only Fear Free certified veterinarian in Cañon City. She lives with her supportive husband, Cody, and their three pups: Slim Shady (Standard Poodle), Grace (Boxer), and Archie (English Bulldog). Together, they enjoy hiking, playing games with family, enjoying craft beer, traveling, and enjoying new cultures.
